Trail Mix made by Mel
My husband and I have been doing better about monitoring our eating habits. Overall we don't eat too bad, but just as many other people we do enjoy good snacks! We have been brainstorming some things that we can eat as snacks besides fruit all the time. One of our challenges has been agreeing to what snacks to keep in the house. We do not like all of the same snacks as each other. For example, I really enjoy green apple slices with a spoonful of almond butter or peanut butter. My husband has no interest in that type of snack! My husband likes granola and pop chips. I also like trail mix as a snack. My husband typically has no interest in the trail mix that I purchase.
Recently, I decided to make my own trail mix instead of buying it pre-packaged. I asked him if he wanted to try it and he showed no interest. One evening I was enjoying some of the last of my home-mixed trail mix. I offered him some one last time. He ate some. He really really liked it! I was completely shocked that he really liked one of "my kind of snacks!" Since that trail mix was such a hit in my home I've decided to share the ingredients here so you can try it in your home:
- Roasted almonds
- Cashews
- Pumpkin seeds
- Raisins
- Cranberries
- Dried Mulberries
- Banana Chips
- *Dark Chocolate Chips (optional, however moderation is key)
I didn't measure the amount of each ingredient, so you can simply add each one according to your liking. *I was trying to keep my trail mix as healthy as possible so I only added a few dark chocolate chip morsels. The darker the chocolate the better, so I would avoid milk chocolate.
I mixed all ingredients in a large bowl and then used a measuring cup to scoop the trail mix into mason jars. I keep the mason jars in our pantry where the snacks go. My husband also takes a mason jar full to work to keep at his desk to enjoy when he feels like having a snack other than fresh fruit. Try this mix and let us know what you think. Also if you have a mix to share please send it to us we are always open to hear from our readers. Enjoy!
